Nuts and Bolts:

In 2002, the United States’ first-ever Red Bull Soapbox Race was held at Denver’s Invesco Field at Mile High. Bobby Cook, Krys Elbaum, Lee Grove, Mike Keiter, and Art Scriven were there, with an entry shaped like a trout. Lee explains, “We love to fish, so the trout creation was born, and we’ve actually taken the trout to a number of events.” The buddies, who are based outside Denver in Arvada, put in a strong showing and finished as runners-up at the inaugural soapbox contest. Now that the race is in their backyard again, they’re returning to the lineup – only this time they’re fishing for an all-out win.

“We had so much fun at the first race that we know this one can only be better,” says Lee (aka, “The Grover”), who will serve as the team’s driver. To prepare, he and the rest of the crew, who hold down jobs ranging from selling real estate to creating artwork, are spending many late nights in Lee’s garage, crafting their latest “Flyin’ Fish” out of materials like foam and plaster. “We bring to the table a lot of racing experience and teamwork,” notes Lee. With a great idea and a tight team, there’s no doubt about it: this entry will be off the hook.
