Nuts and Bolts:
C’mon, admit it. You’ve always been curious about what’s under a Scotsman’s kilt. If you can handle the truth, show up at Manayunk on September 6 and keep an eye out for the Groundskeeper’s Willie.
No, that apostrophe isn’t a typo. Groundskeeper’s Willie is a Massachusetts team who unsuccessfully applied for a Soapbox contest two years ago and have been jonesing to participate ever since. Now that they’re in, they’re making the most of the opportunity by combining their sense of humor and seriously solid skills with a bit of bagpipe and tartan. Somewhat like Groundskeeper Willie himself, Michael McGuire is a landscaper (and sales manager). His brother Dave is a talented graphic designer. Their friend Tom Feldhusen is also a graphic designer, while Tom Calef is a computer engineer working toward a master’s in mechanical engineering and Paul Witherell is a mechanical engineer finishing his doctorate at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. (They all give a shout-out to International Bicycles, which donated parts for steering and brakes, as well as to the many other friends and family members who have helped in the Soapbox effort.) “This is a way for us to hang out, build something ridiculous, go on a fun road trip, and have a blast with a bunch of people who are just as weird as us – but having a great time, too,” Dave comments. You won’t miss this team’s supporters in the crowd. They’ll be the ones with the kick-ass kilts.
