Nuts and Bolts:
Some fun facts for Soapbox spectators:
(a) The beaver is a national symbol of Canada.
(b) The beaver is the largest rodent in North America.
(c) The beaver is often used in emblems for engineering schools.
(d) The beaver is depicted on Canada’s five-cent piece and appeared on the first Canadian postage stamp, the – wait for it – “three-penny Beaver.”
So we’ve got (a) Canucks known for (b) livin’ large and for (c) engineering skills that (d) merit some coin. These must be the fun-loving “Canadian Beavers” who are working like, uh, beavers to engineer a win in Providence! “We all grew up together in the great Canadian outdoors and learned the ways of the beaver,” says team captain Scott Cassidy. “We will be making the soapbox out of sacred Canadian wood cut by the strong teeth of Canadian beavers – as well as a few materials unknown to the beaver culture.” Scott, his brother Mark Cassidy, and friends Happyjack Smoke, James Sushinski, and Jamie White are working their tails off to make the best dam soapbox car ever, and they’re chompin’ to race it. “The biggest challenge is transporting our racer to the event,” Scott acknowledges, adding, “We’re getting in touch with the Canadian geese for tips on migratory patterns.”
