What do you get when you cross a Ford Econoline with the starship Enterprise? No, not another William Shatner joke. You get the “Star Truck,” a soapbox racer from a family in New York. If they’re crazy enough to dream up such a thing, they might just be crazy to win a race down College Hill. “Without a doubt we’re a fairly insane group of nerds, myself included,” says Edward Iacona III of himself, his father Edward, Sr., his brother Andrew, his sister Cathryn, and his girlfriend Patricia Weyer. “We’ve always been into different projects. We do everything from restoration of antiques to racing scale solar cars and much more.” He continues, “As you can see, this is mostly a family affair, and although we don’t fight as much as the guys on ‘American Chopper,’ we are looking to build a mean machine.”

These handy men and women have experience building parade-float-style cars, but the Star Truck will be their first soapbox racer. They’ve already come up with a gimmick Trekkies will love: all of the teammates dressed in red tops will – predictably – bite the dust. “We don’t have the special effects technology to vaporize anyone,” laughs Edward III, “although I have considered the idea in regards to my brother!”
