The members of Team Inept aren't nearly as incompetent as their name implies – they all hold important jobs. Gerry Coogan, 38, is an environmental activist; Harry Leary, 39, is a correction officer; Ed Loper, 38, is an electrician; Kieren Murphy, 38, is a firefighter; and Stephen Napoli, 38, is a construction project manager. They've been friends for over twenty years – ever since their days at Mercy High School in Riverhead, New York, which means they know each other inside and out (they laughingly note that they've even seen each other naked). "We can't agree on the pub to go to when we go out," jokes Napoli, the team captain, "but we all agreed enthusiastically that this soapbox race would give our lives meaning."

The materials they're using to build their vehicle are top secret, though rumor has it that team members have been spotted around town in a 1974 Dodge Police Cruiser trying to “get the band back together,” which can mean only one thing: their soapbox entry will recreate the climax of the movie “The Blues Brothers” on race day. "Jake and Elwood will always be a classic," Napoli states. Inept or not, these teammates are hoping their racer will prove to be a classic, too.
