Who Cut the Cheese
Garage Headquarters: Sturtevant, WI
Driver: Kai McHulty
Mechanics: Sam Boettcher, Troy Stark, Mike McNulty, Brian Holst
Nuts and Bolts:
No entry will be watched more warily at the Red Bull Soapbox Race than Team Who Cut the Cheese – and their name has nothing to do with it. The competition will be keeping an eye on Kai McNulty and his mechanics Sam Boettcher, Brian Holst, Mike McNulty, and Troy Stark because they’re the defending champs. At the 2006 contest in St. Louis, these teammates from Wisconsin (hence the cheesy name) vanquished the competition to win first prize, and they’re looking for a repeat in Providence.
“St. Louis was the best time ever without a motor – or a girl,” laughs Kai, who has known many of his teammates since high school. Most of them have employment experience as professional tool makers, so they’re experts at fabricating well-fitting, functional parts, and their racer is coming together in Kai’s garage from materials such as wood, steel, bicycle parts, fiberglass, tape, foam, and “anything we get our hands on that’s free, cheap, and safe.” Kai sounds supremely confident as he prepares to defend the team’s title as their driver. He crows with anticipation, “After having been in last year’s race, we can say that this is an excellent challenge – but our biggest challenge will be deciding which NASCAR race to go to when we win first place!”
